How many times have you heard opening statements like these?:
“Today, I want to talk to you about our new app.”
Or, “I’m going to talk to you about how we will change the real estate industry with our website.”
No, no, no.
Houston, Helsinki, and Harlem, we have a problem. And the problem is the word talk.
The word talk is what I term a psychological door closer. The word immediately sends a signal to the brain that you’re going to be lectured or admonished in some way.
Remember, teachers and parents talk to children. Managers talk to their employees. But leaders and smart entrepreneurs don’t talk to their audiences. They share stuff with them.
You see, sharing is a noble act. When the word share is used, it signals that you’re going to offer something really important. It is a word that invites and encourages. Just think of how many social media platforms have share buttons.
Yup, share is a word that literally opens the mind to listening.
Okay, let’s put this bad boy to work with a few examples:
“Today, I will share our new software with you.”
“For the next few minutes, I’m going to share how our new website will change the real estate industry.”
“I spent the past two weeks researching a single word – speed. Well, I’d like to share some of what I’ve learned right now.”
Yeah, share your insight, inspiration, ideas, or information with them. But, for goodness sake, don’t talk to them.
